Anti-virus protection is vital in protecting your business against cyber-attacks.
What is a Cyber Attack?
A cyber-attack is any attempt to expose, alter, disable, destroy, steal or gain information from an asset. This means that anyone can be targeted, whether you think you have profitable information or not.
There are many types of attacks that could create problems for you and hinder your business and here are a few examples:
What is Malware?
This is any program that attacks your IT infrastructure for either the purposes of illegally acquiring data from you or for using your IT network to illegally acquire data from others. This data is then sold. Malware is the generic term and includes viruses, spam, and botnet attacks. Malware infiltrates your IT network through your IT hardware or your IT applications. The most common cause is email followed closely by accessing compromised legitimate websites or purpose-designed illegitimate phishing websites. This is why it is so important to train your team to recognise the warning signs.
What is Ransomware?
This is any program that attacks your IT infrastructure with the sole purpose of charging you a ransom to restore it to you or gaining money by other means. They may encrypt your data, cripple your IT network, or disable your phone system. They may use your phone system to call premium numbers they own and obtain money that way. Again, they infiltrate through your IT hardware and applications. Be especially wary of unknown email attachments and web downloads.
What is Phishing?
This is any email that is sent out with the purpose of collecting data from you to use for illegitimate purposes. The emails often appear from legitimate sources because they are ‘spoofed’. They might even appear to come from your own organisation. Again, this is where training is crucial.
What is Vishing?
This is the same process as above only, instead of an email, your organisation is contacted by phone. The same purpose applies to collect data from you to use for illegitimate purposes, so it is important to treat unverified phone enquiries in the same way as unverified email.
