Emerald Welcomes 5G to the West Midlands

Emerald Group welcomes 5G to the West Midlands in trial As a digital business, Emerald welcomes the announcement of the new region wide 5G test bed for the West Midlands. 

The multi-million pound trial of new high speed connectivity, will pave the way for a future national rollout of 5G, making the region the first in the UK ready to trial new 5G applications and services at scale. The Urban Connected Communities Project, the next step in the Government’s 5G Testbed and Trials Programme, will develop a large-scale, 5G pilot across the region, with hubs in Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton.

Emerald CEO, Sarah Windrum, was part of the team who secured the bid. “This is great news for our region as we will be amongst the first to experience the benefits this advanced technology brings. The potential for businesses to explore new digital opportunities is incredibly exciting with use cases ranging from the safety of connected autonomous vehicles to delivering high definition digital content to large audiences as well as supporting innovation in healthcare and construction.”

The 5G Testbeds and Trials Programme forms part of the Government’s Industrial Strategy, aimed at continually driving the UK’s connectivity, telecommunications and digital sectors, and investing in the skills, industries and infrastructure of the future. 

Sarah adds “5G will be instrumental in driving economic growth, creating jobs and increasing investment locally. We need to ensure all businesses are engaged and supported to take advantage of this cutting edge technology. 

The power of 5G will help us to deliver forthcoming high profile events for the region such as the City of Culture and the Commonwealth Games, enhancing the experience of these occasions for all involved. We need everyone to be part of the conversation.”
