How to Use LinkedIn to Engage with Prospective Employers

03 May 2016

Are you looking for work experience, an internship, or full-time employment? Here’s our tips on how LinkedIn can be your greatest tool.

Tidy Up Your URL

If your URL reads something like this; http://linkedin.com/pub/firstname-lastname435564-tgnkgha
Simply delete the extra numbers and letters.

Publish Your Pulse Articles

Please write them! Too often I hear from students at college or university that they cannot write a Pulse article because they don’t have any credibility.

Everyone has and is entitled to their opinion. What do you care about? How they teach science in schools? How Higher Education engages with SMEs? Explain how what you care about is relevant to business. We as potential employers need and want to hear it. Your beliefs and attitude are what separate you from everyone else. The right company will like what you have to say and want to hire you based on your ideas.

Be Professional

LinkedIn is not Facebook, Snapchat, or Instagram. Be your professional self.

Avoid Boring Buzzwords

Try not to use words like Leadership, Creative, Strategic, Dedicated etc. as these are some of the most commonly used words and you want to make sure you differentiate yourself from everyone else.

Be Social

LinkedIn gives you details of work anniversaries and birthdays for your connections. It’s great for relationship building to drop a message saying Congratulations or Happy Birthday. Edit the standard message though and make it personal from you.

List Your Skills

You need to give people looking at your profile an instant picture of what you’re good at, so you need to make sure you showcase exactly what your skills are.

Who Has Your Dream Job?

Thinking about working in Dubai? Want to be an entrepreneur? Find people who do your dream job by using LinkedIn search and entering relevant terms: ‘Digital Strategy’, ‘CTO’ etc. You can enter areas too. Check people’s profiles and anyone you want to engage with, send a personalised connection request. Don’t just click Connect. Explain why you are getting in touch. “I want your job” is a great opener!! Ask them what it is like on a day to day basis. What do you enjoy? What do you not enjoy? What most surprised you about your role? Information is power!

Get Recommendations

I’m not convinced how useful the endorsements are but Recommendations are powerful. Ask business people you know, people you have volunteered with, your teachers / tutors to recommend you. You may want to write something for them or give them some pointers. For example, if you are a looking for a job in technology and you have experience volunteering with a local community group, ask them to talk about your problem solving skills (assuming you have them!), your creativity, and other skills useful to the technology industry. Y

our Recommendations aren’t limited to just your target industry, although if you have that experience obviously it is worth highlighting!
